Come this time in a month or so the word may very well be totally out on this New York quartet. I found out about these dudes a couple months back when doing some Gossip Girl ( Josh Schwartz's latest project) song tracking at my internship. Armed with only a handful of tracks on their EP these boys have managed to create quite a stir with glowing write-ups in both Rolling Stone and SPIN. Combining elements of dance, soul, pop, and funk into their own unique blend these gents are sure to hit it big.
The band's sleaze-dance track "Rich Girls" sports a bass line so sexy you want to dry hump it into submission before it wanders away. The track's line, "When you act like you're so down/Does paranoia come around/And seize your mind now/Roll your eyes" is crooned by guitarist Donald Cummings in a way that is both melodic and borderline apathetic to the point that it bears comparison to, dare I say, Mr. Casablancas himself (:gasp: blasphemy!). Tracks "One Week Of Danger" and "Radio Christiane" also seem to be perfectly poised for PBR dance parties in Brooklyn lofts and rooftops with their strutty string lines and shuffling beats.
Unlike their buzz-band brethren Vampire Weekend, this band has more to offer than kitschy tales from the Ivy League. If life were one giant party, VW would be yakking it up with the elder gents about politics and the economy while The Virgins would be the disheveled drunk trying to bum a smoke from girls way out of his league. In other words, these guys are going to be the torch bearers for the lower Manhattan rock scene. Fueled with their own brand of grit-pop these boys may surge to the indie forefront when their debut album hits stores sometime this summer.
(Virgins get sexual...har har pun - "Rich Girls")

Side Note: Met two of the band members while working the door at SPIN's Year In Music party. The bassist...Nick I believe...is one very chill dude and a decent DJ as well. To my embarrassment I wound up holding the drummer and his friends at the line for a good 20 minutes while confirming that his guests definitely were on the guest list. My bad dude.
