There are times when an artist comes along with a message so profound and honest that they beg their audience to question society. In this case the question is. "why didn't this happen earlier?" So is the case with California songstress gone bitter Katy Perry. Her single "Ur So Gay" mocks the stereotypical male hipster who "needs SPF 45 just to stay alive" and is too busy "reading Hemingway" than to give her any attention. Unless you've been living under a rock in the modern music scene then this most definitely strikes a chord or two. Hopefully, your in league with this reviewer who nodded his head in agreement while fighting back tears of hysterical laughter.
(Katy Perry will cut your soy latte loving ass)
The image of the music fan with tight jeans and long hair has long been a staple since the 60's but in todays music society the trends and style of many have become overindulgent caricatures. Perry calls out this collection of skinny, makeup wearing boys declaring in the chorus, "Your so gay/and you don't even like boys."Perhaps the reason the song connects so well is that it doesn't blatantly call out the easy target of adolescent emo boys but transcends to ridicule full-grown hipsters as well. The majority of these guys are nice dudes just following a trend for acceptance into this boys club. The rest are annoying deusches who were pretty friendless until they threw a scarf over their shoulder and started pontificating on and on about shoegaze. Perry has seen the type and her slick pop tune is more or less a "fuck you" not just from her but from a whole body of music fans grown weary of hipster folk.
Perry, however, won't be pigeonholed as an artist who will rise to minor fame on the sole basis of a novelty song. Her other tracks are dance hall pleasers including a standout cover of The Outfield's "Use Your Love". With approval from artists like Madonna and Travis from Gym Class Heroes (she was the cute chick in the hoodie that he falls in love with at the end of the "Cupid's Chokehold vid) Perry is sure to span a wide pop audience and may even win over the hearts of a few embarassed hipsters as well.

Side Note: We also love Perry because she resembles a "hot" version of Zooey Deschanel.
